The Departments of Black Studies and Chicana and Chicano Studies are pleased to announce that UT Austin History PhD Student Maria Esther Hammack will be delivering a colloquium talk titled, "The Underground Railroad Reconsidered: Freedom Fighters and Liberation in Mexican Destinations" on March 1 (Monday) from 6:00 PM to 7:15 PM. This collaborative inter-departmental event is part of the Division of Social Sciences Racial Justice Initiative.
María Esther Hammack is a Ph.D. Student from University of Texas at Austin, with an MA in Atlantic World History. The talk The Underground Railroad Reconsidered: Freedom Fighters and Liberation in Mexican Destinations is as follows:
While histories of the Underground Railroad often center Canadian freedom destinations, thousands of Black Americans fled South to claim freedom in Mexican spaces. This talk will overview Mexico's process of abolition and Black peoples' liberation pursuits to showcase how Mexican freedom was engineered and how it materialized for Black freedom seekers. It will also showcase the significance of Black liberation and Mexican freedom in the histories of American slavery, abolition, and emancipation.
