Prof. Casillas was honored by the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) with the 2016 Book of the Year Award. Each year, the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) adopts a book written by a Latino/a author as the Conference book. Prof. Casillas's Sounds of belonging: U.S Spanish-language Radio and Public Advocacy (New York University Press, 2014) was selected for this year's conference. Her book examines how immigration politics throughout the twentieth century has shaped the character and growth of U.S Spanish-language radio. During an opening plenary session, Prof. Casillas had the opportunity to explain the inspiration behind the book and how readers across the country have responded to it.
