Guisela Latorre
Assistant Professor of Chicano Studies PhD, University of
Illinois, Urbana-Champaign My research has
focused on the art work by modern Chicana/o and Latin American
artists. I am interested in investigating how artistic currents
previously ignored by traditional art historical treatments can be
incorporated back into the canon of my discipline. I found, however,
that in order to include Chicana/o and Latin American art into the
existing art histories I needed to approach artistic production in
an interdisciplinary way. For this reason, I worked closely with
individuals from various fields, not just art history, during my
academic training. It was only through the use of methodologies from
diverse disciplines such as history, literature, anthropology and,
of course, art history that I was able to understand the
complexities of the artistic production by Chicana/o and Latin
American artists.
As a newly hired faculty in the Department of Chicano Studies at
UCSB, I will be teaching four courses on Chicana/o art for the
2002-2003 academic year, three of which are completely new classes
to the departmental curriculum. These are Chicana Art and Feminism,
Contemporary Chicana/o Art, Humor and the Chicana/o Artist and
Figuration in Chicana/o Art. With these courses, I will be filling a
void that currently exists in the discipline of Chicana/o studies as
a whole, namely the focus on the visual arts. I look forward to
working closely with the nationally renowned members of the UCSB
Chicano Studies faculty and staff while also hoping to make
important contributions to this strong department, especially in the
development of their soon-to-be-established graduate program. |
